Visual Culture Component:
Elementary students see images of the American Flag and hear the Star Spangled Banner in their everyday lives. This is particularly seen at sporting events across America. From baseball, to basketball, to football, and to NASCAR the Star Spangled Banner is sang or played before the start of each of these events. The bigger the event, the more we cant wait to see who is singing the Star Spangled Banner. One of the most famous people would be Whitney Houston when she sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Superbowl. The students will be able to use the Star Spangled Banner as an inspiration to help create their collage.

Internet Photo and Clip Art Sources
Use your favorite search engine to locate photo and clip art images that students can use to create the This Is America! Flag collage. Here are a handful of the patriotic photos and clip art images found:
ARTISTS OR ART HISTORY FOCUS:
Collage:
A collage is both an artwork made from objects that are glued down onto a surface, such as a piece of paper, canvas, or board, and the technique of making such an artwork. The objects can be whatever you wish, for example tissue paper, wrapping paper, newspaper pages, magazine pages, cardboard, foil, metal, plastic, fabric, wire, photographs, found objects such as shells, feathers, or stones, and 'rubbish' such as broken toys or appliances.
Pablo Picasso & Georges Braque:
Spanish painter Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Picasso, along with Georges Braque (1882-1963) were the two earliest modern collage artists. Experts continue to argue who was the first to collage. Braque and Picasso started creating collages at about the same time and both worked together closely. Both men went on to become co-founders of the cubist movement.
Picasso's collages include Still Life with a Chair Caning (1911-1912); Guitar. Sheet Music and Wine Glass; and Man with a Guitar.
Braque's collages include: Fruit Dish and Glass (1912) and Violin and Pipe (1913).

Man Ray:
Better known today for his photography, Man Ray (1890-1976) considered himself a painter. His collages include Involute (1917) and The Revolving Doors (1916-1917), a series of ten collages.
Hannah Hoch:
Hannah Hoch (1889-1978) was a German artist who was the first woman accepted in the Dada Movement. In 1919, Hoch was the first artist to create a photo montage. Among her collages are Hochfinanz (1923), Equilibre (1925) and Made for a Party (1936).
Henri Matisse:
Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Later on in his life after being wheelchair bound and with the aid of assistants, he set about creating cut paper collages, often on a large scale, called gouaches découpés.
Jasper Johns:
Jasper Johns is one of most significant and influential American painters of the twentieth century. Jasper Johns is an American printmaker, painter, and sculptor. His work depicts commonplace emblems such as flags, targets, maps, and numbers, and through his genius manipulation to the canvas' surface texture, he raises the images to iconic status. His best known paint is Flag.

Reflection:
After I finished teaching I looked back and realized there were indeed things that I could do differently. Then I reviewed the peer reviews that I received and this gave me even more ideas that would be a great adaption to my lesson plan. One thing I would say is my in class lesson presentation was modified from the original for time. I reduced the size of the flag to a size of 4 sheets of paper by 3 sheets of paper. In this size the paper is orientated in landscape. This is a huge reduction for the original bulletin board size. I also had the class bring in the pictures. For the actual lesson, we would do this in class. In my classroom I will have much more time to do this part of the lesson.
The Video of the War of 1812 would have been watched before the art project was started. This would allow for a better understanding of what we were going to cover. I would also start with the Cactus Cuties singing the Star Spangled Banner. I would have the students stand and if they know the words sing.
The vocabulary words I used should have been gone over more in both the number used and in the definition of them.. To really drive this home could use a game to help. One very important point I have to make is plan ahead. To be successful with this lesson there should be enough time so that plenty of magazines are available for the students to use. Also there should be many different types of magazines so that the students have plenty of options to choose from. From my peer reviews it was also brought to my attention that some children may want to draw their pictures instead of cutting hem out of magazine articles. This is just fine to let them express their ideas this way.
This project could also be a great way to involve the entire school. Everything would stay the same with the exception of every child in the school would be able to put a picture one the collage.
I read all my peer reviews and two really stood out at me and both gave me great ideas. The first is in regards to the pictures. It was stated that students should be free without prejudice to put what pictures they want on the collage. By this I don't mean as in what the pictures is, but by what is represented. With the topic "What America Means to Me" students should be free to express their opinions on the topic whether it is good or bad. This is their opinion and while I thought of many items for the past some may use the present or future. Let them know they will not be in trouble if their picture represents bad things America has done or about it.
The second thing that stood out from the comments would work great for an in classroom board, This would be to use mini flags to create the big flag. This would really be a great way to show off what a collage is, a large number of small collage to create one big collage.
I think that the best part of the presentation was the videos and music. Everyone seemed to really like this and had good comments about it.
